Description

This emission nebula in Gemini, also known as the Jellyfish Nebula, is a magnificent remant of a supernova explosion estimated to have occurred in the range of 3,000 to 30,000 years ago.

Above image is a 2-panel, 10-hour mosaic capturing most of the nebula's surface area.

Imaging Session

  • Date: January 14 & 21, 2009
  • Exposure: 10 hours: 2 panels x 20 frames/panel x 15 minutes/frame unbinned at -25C
  • Camera: SBIG ST-10XME with AstroDon H-Alpha 6nm
  • Equipment: Takahashi FS-152 f/8 on Takahashi NJP mount
  • Guiding: external guidescope Takahashi FS-60C and Meade DSI Pro
  • Observatory control and automation software: CCD Commander V1.5.34, Maxim DL V4.56, FocusMax 3.4.1
  • Location: Theberge Remote Observatory, Robosky, Orangeville, Ontario
