Showy Lady's Slipper
(cypripedium reginae) - Orchid Family
The tallest and, arguably, the most beautiful of the northern native
Orchids, it is especially common in the area of the
Great Lakes. It has been over-picked and should be protected from
further exploitation.
[Audubon Field Guide to North American Wild Flowers - Eastern Region]
It exists in a delicate symbiosis with a fungus that it requires to
nuture the seeds as they sprout. Transplanting is most often
unsuccessful (since you can't see the fungus) so why not leave them
where you found them and visit each year when they bloom!
