M31 - The Andromeda Galaxy
The Andromeda Galaxy
  • Description: M31 - the Andromeda galaxy, the closest major galaxy to us at about 2.2 million light years. Most likely the largest in our "local group" of galaxies. Easily visible naked eye from a dark location, stunning in large binoculars! (but you won't see the colours) First recorded history appears to be by a Persian astronomer in 964 AD though it was spotted long before that. M31 is fairly large at about 6 full moons in length.
