Galaxy Messier 101
  • Description: Spiral galaxy Messier 101 in Ursa Major. One of the larger galaxies in the northern sky and one of the closest at "only" 21 million light-years away. Bright at magnitude 8.3, about 29 x 27 arc minutes in size. Also known as NGC5457 and Arp 26. The bright round smudge on the right side is NGC5474, a peculiar dwarf galaxy, distorted by interaction with M101. 5474 is magnitude 11.3, about 4.7 arc minutes in diameter.
